Cape Negro Island are actually two islands that are connected by a narrow strip of land. It was so-named by Samuel De Champlain who thought he saw a black man standing on shore. Almost 800 acres of land and approx. 7 miles of ocean frontage, about 1 mile off the mainland, this island is full of history. It was originally settled by more than 30 families, mainly sheep farmers and fisherman. A once public road runs the entire length of the island, past abandoned farm sites, wells, pastures and forests. The elevation of the island is well over 100 feet above sea level, making for great views, all the sunsets and sunrises you can wish for and also safe building sites. Two natural, sandy harbours provide protection and guarantee for good swimming and a safe marina. There is an abundance of natural phenomena like a spectacular thunder-hole, dramatic rocky cliffs and a natural stone barge landing.
